An unusual kidney shaped antique 'vesta' case. These cases were made for keeping and striking wax matches. Gentlemen of the Victorian and Edwardian eras often wore them on their fob watch chains along with their fob watch, watch keys and other necessary items of the time like wax seal stamps.
This one dates to around the 1920's mark and is also unusual for the inlay of nephrite or New Zealand jade as it was called. It is nicely made and is in excellent condition for its age!
The nephrite is a lovely moss green translucent colour.
This quirky curio from a hundred years ago makes a wonderful piece to wear as a pendant today. It is large enough to make a striking and chunky statement on a chain, either long or short.
Give it as a unique and attractive piece of history to wear today, or of course, you could keep it for yourself!
The case measures 4.5 cms long and 2 cms across at its widest points.
It is marked with a 'Sterling' stamp under the little hinged flap.
