Fab Art Deco brooch made from butterfly wings and hand painted to depict a wonderful sailing ship tossed on stormy seas. Made from Sterling Silver, it is marked silver, and with a patent number that identifies it as being made by 'Shipton Co'. This was an English company in Birmingham, who made jewellery up until 1939 in the UK
Butterfly Wings were carefully selected in the 1920's, in England, mainly from the iridescent Morpho butterfly wings imported from South America and, along with reverse hand painting on glass, they were utilised to create some wonderful colourful picture brooches and other objets d'art. The subject matter was wide ranging, from egyptian scenes, to victorian ladies in crinoline skirts!
This one is unusually detailed and vividly coloured, the sea perfectly captured in its stormy shiny glory.
It would make a stunning gift for a sailing enthusiast! Or a special addition to your collection!
