Pietra Dura in its literal translation from Italian to English is 'hard stone'. The agate stones were inlaid into an onyx base to form a 'picture' that is both beautiful and durable. The themes of the Victorian era Pietra Dura jewellery were often English naturalist scenes, or ancient Roman buildings.
This large square pendant features a flower and two butterflies. The eye catching unique appeal of these pieces is in the contrasting colours and textures of the natural hard stones. Here, malachite, chalcedony, carnelian and turquoise combine so well in a piece of jewellery as they do on an artists palate!
The Pietra Dura stone set pendant dates to circa 1880, and has been reset into this stylish and simple gold framed pendant. It is made from 9 carat gold and would look wonderful on a piece of black ribbon or on a rose gold chain.
A wearable antique treasure that still captivates with its whimsy and charm.
The pendant measures 6.5 cms in diameter.
The Pietra Dura piece is an original antique; the pendant's gold frame has been handmade to fit the piece.
